How to Tell Hand-Carved from Machine-Carved Furniture: 10 Tests You Can Do in a Showroom

Hand carving shows variation; machine carving shows repetition. The fastest checks are to compare two supposedly identical elements at close range, look into the deepest recesses for tool marks rather than fuzz, run a thumb along an undercut, and check whether the carving respects the grain or cuts straight through it. None of these takes more than a minute.

Run your thumb along the inside of a carved leaf. Not the top — the inside, where the tool had to turn.

If every leaf on that panel feels the same, nobody made it. A person carving a run of leaves is making a hundred small decisions about where the grain is running, how much the chisel wants to travel, whether the light will catch this edge or that one. The results are close but never congruent. A three-axis router executing a toolpath makes the same decision every time, because it is not a decision.

This matters commercially. The gap between a genuinely hand-carved Rajasthani cabinet and a CNC-routed one finished by hand can be three or four times the price, and from two metres away in good showroom lighting the two look identical. That is not an accident. Showroom lighting is designed to flatter.

Here are ten tests. Do them in order; the first four settle most cases.

Test 1: Compare two elements that should be identical

What to look for: find a motif that repeats — four corner rosettes, a run of leaves along an apron, the same flower on both stiles of a door. Photograph one on your phone, then hold the phone next to the other.

What it means: hand-carved repeats are similar. Machine-carved repeats are identical, down to the position of every vein and the depth of every recess.

Why: a router repeats a coordinate file. A carver repeats a memory. The human error is the evidence.

This single test resolves the majority of showroom cases. Do it first.

Test 2: Look into the deepest recess

What to look for: the tightest, deepest point of the carving — where a petal meets a stem, or where two scrolls cross. Get your eye close. Use your phone torch.

What it means: a hand-carved recess ends in a crisp intersection of two cut planes, usually with a visible facet where the chisel stopped. A routed recess ends in a radius, because a rotating cutter has a diameter and cannot cut an internal corner sharper than itself. Machine recesses also frequently hold a little fuzz — torn fibres the cutter could not reach to clean.

Why: this is geometry, not skill. No router bit can produce a zero-radius internal corner. Finishing crews sand and fill to hide it, which is why you have to look into the deep points rather than at the surface.

Test 3: Feel the undercut

What to look for: slide a fingertip under the edge of a raised element — the lip of a petal, the outer curve of a scroll. Can you get a nail behind it?

What it means: deep undercutting is expensive on a machine and natural by hand. A carver rotates the gouge and goes in behind the form. A three-axis router works from directly above and cannot undercut at all; a five-axis machine can, but the machines that produce mid-market Indian furniture are almost never five-axis.

Why: this is the test that separates real relief from the appearance of relief. Hand carving has shadow that moves as you move. Routed carving has shadow that sits still.

Test 4: Check whether the carving respects the grain

What to look for: find a place where a carved line crosses the grain direction. Look at the quality of the cut on either side.

What it means: a carver reads grain before cutting and changes direction, or angle, or tool, to avoid tearing. You will see the carving subtly re-orient around a knot or a rising grain. A machine cuts the path it was given regardless, so cross-grain sections tear out and get filled.

Why: as Wasim Ahmad — who has carved in Jaipur for four decades — puts it, the grain sets the direction of the design rather than the other way round. That is not a poetic statement. It is a working method, and it leaves a visible signature.

Test 5: Look for tool marks in the background, not the motif

What to look for: the flat ground behind a relief carving — the recessed field the motif sits proud of.

What it means: hand-punched or hand-textured grounds show a slightly irregular stipple, matting or shallow scallop. Machined grounds show either a perfectly flat surface or a regular scalloped pattern with a consistent pitch — the stepover of the cutter, sometimes visible as fine parallel ridges under raking light.

Why: the motif is where the finishing crew concentrates. The background is where they don’t.

Test 6: Raking light

What to look for: get the surface between your eye and a light source, so light travels almost parallel to the face. Tilt the piece if it is small enough, or move your head if it is not.

What it means: raking light exposes the cutter stepover ridges, sanding scratches and the fill used over torn grain, none of which are visible under overhead showroom light.

Why: flat, even, high-mounted lighting hides surface topography. That is why showrooms use it. Take a piece to a window if you can.

Test 7: The reverse and the interior

What to look for: turn the piece over. Open the drawer and look at the back of the front. Look inside the carcass.

What it means: on genuinely handmade furniture the unseen surfaces still show handwork — plane marks, hand-cut joinery, saw kerfs, a chalk line. On machine-carved pieces the unseen surfaces are usually machine-planed sheet stock, biscuit or dowel joined, sometimes with visible CNC registration holes.

Why: nobody pays to hide handwork where it will not be seen. If the invisible parts are industrial, the visible parts probably are too, whatever the showroom says.

Test 8: Ask what the piece is made from — then check the answer

What to look for: ask the species. Then look at the end grain, at the underside, and at any exposed edge.

What it means: heavily carved production furniture is often carved in a soft, uniform, easily machined timber — mango, rubberwood, or a plantation hardwood — and stained to read as sheesham or teak. Machining loves consistency; hand carving does not require it.

Why: the species claim is the easiest one to check and the one most often wrong.

Test 9: Look at the edges of the motif for sanding rounding

What to look for: the crisp arris where a carved surface meets the background.

What it means: hand carving leaves a sharp arris that the carver deliberately preserves. Machine carving is sanded aggressively afterwards — to remove tearout, fuzz and stepover — and sanding rounds every edge slightly. A whole panel of uniformly soft edges is a finishing-crew signature.

Why: sanding is how machine work is made presentable, and sanding is indiscriminate.

Test 10: Count the hours against the price

What to look for: estimate. A moderately detailed 600 × 400 mm relief panel is realistically several days of one carver’s work.

What it means: if the price of a heavily carved four-door cabinet works out to less than a few weeks of skilled labour plus timber plus finish plus margin plus freight, the carving was not done by hand. The arithmetic is not subtle.

Why: the Crafts Council of India and Institute for Human Development study published in May 2026 found average earnings across India’s handicraft and handloom sector of about ₹270 a day — below the statutory minimum wage in every state surveyed. Even at that depressed rate, hand carving hours accumulate into real money quickly. A price that does not accommodate them is telling you something.

The tests that fail — and what fakes them

An honest guide has to say where its own method breaks. These four things fool the checklist.

Deliberately randomised toolpaths. Modern CAM software can introduce controlled variation across repeats. It is not common in mid-market Indian production, but it exists, and it defeats Test 1 on its own. This is why you run several tests, not one.

Hand-finished machine carving. The most common category in the market, and the most honest sellers describe it accurately. The blank is routed, then a carver goes over it with chisels to sharpen detail and add undercuts. This is handwork — just not the handwork that justifies a full hand-carved price. It usually reveals itself under Test 5: sharpened motif, machined background.

Faked tool marks. Distressing crews can punch, scrape and gouge a surface to simulate handwork. Simulated tool marks are usually too even in depth and appear in places a carver would have no reason to put them — on flat unworked ground, or in the same position on every repeat.

Genuine antique machine carving. Carving machines are not new. Pattern-tracing carving machines were in industrial use in Europe from the nineteenth century, so “old” does not mean “handmade.”

The honest position: these tests tell you how something was made. They do not tell you whether it is good. A well-designed, well-proportioned, hand-finished machine-carved cabinet in properly seasoned timber is a better object than a badly proportioned hand-carved one in green wood. Method is not quality. It is just method — and you should know which one you are paying for.

What to actually ask the seller

Five questions, in this order:

  1. Was this carved by hand, by machine, or machine-roughed and hand-finished? The three-way phrasing makes evasion harder than a yes/no.
  2. Where was it carved, and by whom? A seller with a real supply chain can name a town and usually a workshop. Saharanpur, Jodhpur, Jaipur, Channapatna — these are answerable.
  3. How many hours of carving are in this piece? Anyone commissioning hand carving knows this number, because it is how they were billed.
  4. What is the species, and is it kiln-dried? Moisture content matters more than carving method for whether the piece survives.
  5. Can I see an unfinished or in-progress example? The answer to this question is more revealing than the answer itself.

The Folklorei view

By the tenth test, something has usually shifted for people. They came in looking for perfection and left understanding that in carved work, perfection is the warning sign.

That is a genuinely strange thing to internalise. Every other category of manufactured object trains you to read uniformity as quality — a phone with an uneven chamfer is a defective phone. Carving inverts it. The unevenness is the information. It is the only physical evidence that a specific person, on a specific day, made a specific decision about where the chisel should go.

Which is why the thumb test is the one worth remembering. Not the raking light, not the undercut, not the arithmetic. Just: run your thumb along the inside of the leaf. If every leaf feels the same, no one made it.

Why do carved pieces have slightly different left and right sides?
Because a carver works each side separately, reading the grain of that particular piece of wood as they go. Grain rises and falls differently on each board, so the same motif is executed with different tool angles. Symmetry in hand carving is intentional but approximate.

Can tool marks be faked?
