The story

The carved relief work on the borders draws on the ornamental vocabulary that has developed over centuries in the workshops of Rajasthan: the lotus medallion at the corner, the scrolling vine along the long sides, the stylised flower at the midpoint of each border — motifs whose familiarity does not diminish their beauty but deepens it, each seen variant adding another layer of meaning to the form. The Folklorei Collection presents this mirror frame as part of its documentation of the living craft traditions of Jodhpur and the surrounding region. Each piece is individually made, the variations in carving detail and finish that distinguish one frame from another being marks of genuine handmade work rather than defects to be corrected. The finish is applied by hand in layers — base coat, colour layers, and protective seal — a process that builds the surface slowly and gives it the depth and warmth that distinguishes hand-finished wood from machine-applied paint. The colour choices draw on the traditional palette of Rajasthani painted furniture: warm ochres, deep teaks, and the particular blue-grey that appears in the finest painted haveli interiors. A mirror frame is an object that one encounters daily, and its quality of presence accumulates over time. The first glance establishes it as beautiful; the second reveals the carving detail; the third begins to understand the compositional logic of the decorative program; and subsequent encounters continue to reveal new aspects of a piece whose maker put more into it than a brief inspection can exhaust. The mirror frame is among the most fundamental objects in the Indian domestic interior — the piece of furniture before which the household member prepares themselves for the world.
