The story

The motifs chosen for the door’s decoration carry meaning within the Rajasthani folk tradition. The peacock — present on almost every Rajasthani painted door — is the emblem of beauty, rain, and the rejuvenating arrival of the monsoon. The flowering tree is the world-tree, the axis around which all life is organised. The geometric border is the frame within which the natural world’s abundance is contained and ordered. Folklorei presents these doors as architectural objects of genuine cultural significance — pieces that carry within them the entire history of the tradition from which they spring. Each door is individually made and painted, the painter’s hand evident in every stroke. They are available as individual doors or as paired sets for the formal double-door entrance. The decorated door is the face that a building presents to the world — the first thing seen by the visitor, the last thing that marks the transition from the outside to the inside. In the domestic architecture of Rajasthan, this threshold moment has been treated with extraordinary seriousness: the doors of village homes, merchant havelis, and royal palaces alike are worked with carved and painted decoration that declares the inhabitant’s identity and aspiration. Jodhpur’s tradition of painted and carved wooden doors draws on multiple craft streams: the woodcarver’s knowledge of how to render motifs in relief, the painter’s command of the Rajasthani folk palette, and the collective decorative wisdom accumulated over generations of making objects for the domestic threshold. The craftspeople who work in this tradition understand the door not merely as a functional object but as a statement. The painting process begins with the carved surface — the relief work that creates the dimensional qualities that distinguish this tradition from flat-painted surfaces. The paint is applied in layers over the carved relief, the colours building up to create a surface that has genuine depth: the deepest indigo of the background, the mid-tones of the botanical forms, and the highlights that pick out the carved edges in gold or white.
