The story

The furniture traditions of Jodhpur represent one of North India’s great concentrations of heritage cabinetmaking and decorative woodwork. The craftspeople of the Blue City and its surrounding villages have been making furniture of outstanding quality for centuries, combining the structural knowledge of traditional Indian joinery with the decorative ambitions of the region’s folk art traditions. The construction of this piece draws on the principles of traditional Indian furniture making: the use of seasoned hardwood that has been allowed to stabilise before working, the joinery techniques that create strong, lasting connections without reliance on metal fixings, and the proportional conventions that have proven their fitness over centuries of making and using furniture in the Indian domestic context. The painted and carved decoration on the exterior surfaces transforms the furniture from a purely functional object into an expression of cultural identity. The motifs — drawn from the vocabulary of Rajasthani folk art — carry meaning within the tradition: floral forms representing abundance and seasonal renewal, geometric patterns representing the ordering of natural energy into human-useful form, bird and animal figures representing the qualities prized in the domestic world. The finish is applied by hand in the traditional manner — layers of primer, pigment, and protective seal built up slowly to create a surface that has genuine depth and warmth. The palette draws on the characteristic colours of Rajasthani interior design: the warm ochres and terracottas, the deep indigo and teal, the accents of gold and ivory that animate the composition. Folklorei presents this piece as part of its heritage furniture documentation — an ongoing effort to identify, describe, and sustain the furniture-making traditions of the Jodhpur region. Each piece in the collection is individually made, and the subtle variations between similar pieces are marks of genuine handcrafted work rather than defects to be corrected.
